My go-to movie and head and shoulders above other slasher films such as Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm street. Some people won't like Halloween for it's seeming stereotypical direction, but that's because it inspired those very cliches. Micheal Myers still remains a terrifying silent stalker, brutally hacking away at a simple group of teenagers out of a whole crowd. The performances are polarizing, reacting and deepening Myers with and enjoyably rave on with speeches reminiscent of old monster movies. The tension of the scenes extends to purposefully uncomfortable time that has the payoff of iconic scenes. Halloween has everything that encapsulates the holiday, filling up with treats while preserving the spooky spirit of the holiday.

The movie itself is a classic, it deserves mentioned with other great horror classics such as Psycho.
Directed and scored by John Carpenter, it is a simple exercise in atmosphere and simple, but effective terror. From the first chilling scene where Michael Myers, a 6 year old boy murders his sister wearing a clown mask, Carpenter doesn't waste a moment. The boy was sent to a insane asylum. He escapes 15 years later and goes back to his hometown of Haddonfield, Illinois. His psychiatrist Dr. Loomis played by Donald Pleasence is convinced that Michael is pure evil incarnate. He never wanted him to get out of state custody. We meet Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, a pretty but shy teenager. She has some friends, typical teenage girls. We see Michael stalking Laurie, she is going to baby sit a kid in her neighborhood. The scenes where Michael is looking at Laurie are very chilling. Night comes and Michael goes after Laurie's friends. The best thing about Halloween is the simple way it is shot, very long shots,especially with Michael in the background. When the killing starts the movie doesn't let up. Michael kills in different ways but the scenes are virtually bloodless, it's about mood and terror not gore. When he finally gets to Laurie, she is able to fight back, but michael is more of a force of nature and keeps coming. Jamie Lee Curtis is a very likeable heroine. Donald Pleasence is good as Loomis, he plays him as a very scared almost obsessed man that knows what Michael is. Evil.
It goes without saying that this movie is helped by a simple but terrifying score written by John Carpenter. It is as iconic as any score in film history.
A Masterpiece.
